Why you should consider a light for longboarding at night?
While you likely would not dream of going out on a bicycle at night without a light, there are many longboarders who routinely skip using any type of light or reflective device as they are taking to the roads in darker conditions. Helmets and protective gear are not the only forms of safety equipment that can be essential to a longboarder. If you plan on regularly going out in the dark or you ride home from work on a longboard at dusk, you could be putting yourself in danger without using a light.
Options for longboard lights
There are many longboarders that tend to use helmet lights or some form of head lamp while they are boarding but these do not offer much in the way of visibility from the back. While a headlamp can be very useful for helping you navigate darker conditions exactly where you are looking, most safety experts would recommend the use of a front and rear facing light.
A mounted front-facing LED light can be integrated into the design of your longboard. It can include a snap-on feature to put it along the front of your board and face out in a similar way as a headlight. You can also include a rear braking or reflecting light on your longboard for added safety. With this type of lighting system, you will be able to illuminate the road in front of you and watch for hazards as well as make sure that the cars and other traffic around you will see that you are near to them.
Why should you use a longboard light?
Some of the most severe accidents that you can face are collisions with cars and crashing into things at top speed. Many longboarders avoid riding at night just for the simple safety consideration of not being able to see the same distance. The prospect of getting injured at night on a longboard goes up considerably without a light and without a proper light.
Electric and even unpowered longboards can reach speeds of 35+ mph on downhill sections of pavement and this can lead to a situation where it is very difficult to react without an accident or fall. Most of the cases of longboarding accidents resemble that of a bike crash and they can commonly occur when bikes, pedestrians or cars do not see the longboarder coming from behind. If a longboarder has to make a sudden turn or bail out at a high speed, it will often result in broken bones, heavy scrapes and more.
